A PARROT STORY
A month ago my son was walking in a park in Baie d’Urfé. He saw a large green parrot in a tree. He climbed the tree and reached out to it. The parrot first perched on his finger and then on his shoulder. And because there was a frost that night, you could say that he saved that parrot's life.

Triumphantly, he brought it home.

We already have two birds in my house, a cockatiel and a love bird. They do not share a cage because the love bird would kill the cockatiel. Ironic, isn’t it? Love and hate are such intertwined emotions.

So my son found a smaller cage for the newly evicted love bird and moved the large parrot into the larger cage. It didn’t take long for us to find out why the parrot had been abandoned. Whenever we tried to watch TV in our den, the parrot made so much noise that we could no longer hear the sound.

It also made a huge mess, spreading its seeds all over the place. It aggressively picked its water container up with its beak and threw it to the ground. And I won’t even mention the poop.

But my son reminded me that we were lucky. This parrot would cost over $1,500 if we were to buy it at the local pet store. And now we had one for free.

I will give the parrot its due. It was an amazing bird, in many ways as affectionate and intelligent as a cat. But my wife is allergic to cats and she was beginning to get an allergic reaction to this bird. It is so much bigger than our other two birds the dander factor was up to 11.

After a couple of weeks the parrot was driving us crazy. It squawked non stop. And because of it the other two birds squawked along with it like they never did before.

But we were saved by serendipity and the City of Baie d'Urfé.

My wife was driving on Morgan, idling under the 20, waiting for another car to take the stop sign when she noticed the new electric billboard put up by the city. It was displaying public service announcements. She saw one about a lost cat, complete with a picture. She thought that this was a good idea. Then up came one about a lost parrot. It was large green parrot just like ours!

A horn honked behind her and she had to move on. But when she got home she told my son about it. He had already bonded with the bird. It often slept in his bedroom perched high atop a mirror on the wall. But even though he did not want to part with it, by this time he realized that we could not keep it. The upkeep was considerable. And these birds are needy - demanding constant attention and affection.

So he drove to Baie d’Urfé and waited for the lost parrot announcement to roll by on the electric billboard. He wrote down the number. He phoned. It was a lady in Ste. Anne de Bellevue. Yes, she was missing her large green parrot. And she was overjoyed to hear from him. She told him that she had had the parrot for 17 years.

He and my daughter got in his car and they drove the bird over to the lady’s apartment. She was visibly moved to see the parrot again. It came to her shoulder and they caressed each other. My kids could tell that the lady had found her loving parrot once again.

The emotional reunion made my son and daughter feel that they had done the right thing. But what sealed the deal was that the nice lady gave my son a reward. She gave him a cheque and said: “Here. This is what he cost 17 years ago.
Nous sommes très heureux à Perroquetsecours d'avoir pu contribué à cette réunion.
