Perroquetsecours is looking for a foster home who has experience with parrots and having some time to devote to a specific case that we've had under our wings for the last past 2 years . We would like, if possible, to keep this bird within the organization for several reasons. Billie is a 20 years old blue-fronted male amazon surrendered to us, who went through obvious trauma and who was in poor condition when he first arrived. This bird is looked after by the CHUV, he has a Teflon stent that prevents him from being in direct contact with other birds who could tear it off. He is also unpredictable and anxious when outside his cage, reason for being under anxiety medication at low dosage. In addition, we got him an implant to dose his hormones. This bird has made tremendous progress and went through three foster homes within Perroquetsecours, progressing at his own paste in each family. He is somewhat unpredictable especially when entering his comfort zone and when he is out of his cage, if anything or anyone enters the area, whether it is humans, dogs, cats or other birds, he will attack but not systematically like before. If you do not enter this area, het is passive most of the time. He lets us caress him when inside his cage.
We invest a lot in Billie, a lots of patience, love and time and we would not want to see him regress. The chosen foster home must avoid direct contact with his own animals, Billie tested negative for all 4 avian diseases and sexed as a male. Ideally the foster home souldn't have young children still living at home at home and will have to be very careful around this bird. The foster family will have to keep a diary of his behavior day by day, along with his dosage of medication to adjust the dose if needed and to see if the implant efficiency decreases . Billie is followed by a team of behaviorists and veterinarians. We are looking for long term solution for this bird who needs calm, stability and someone with time for him. He is not demanding but needs to be monitored. He likes to be in the room where the family is most often. Het must have his dose of medication each night in a small dish prepared for him. Perroquetsecours will cover all costs associated with this bird. We are not talking of adoption for now but it may be considered if all goes well with him. We are looking for a serious foster home who has the skills to manage a bird just like him.
